Kolkata’s flyover in UP govt ad featuring CM Yogi Adityanath, TMC alleges BJP copying Mamata Banerjee
A full-page UP govt advertorial to promote CM Yogi Adityanath for the upcoming state election in 2022 has sparked controversy across the nation.
Kolkata, West Bengal, 12 September 2021 -
The advertisement released by the UP government focussed on the development works by BJP in the last five years, often claimed as the most under-developed Indian state. But the collage of the photographs featuring CM Yogi Adityanath highlighting the changes has landed the party in controversy.
The UP govt advertorial
The UP government advertorial focusing on developmental work done by the BJP government featured a picture of Kolkata with Yogi Adityanath in the background. A wedge of pictures below the advertisement appears to be a photo of Kolkata — a flyover in trademark blue and white paint with yellow taxis on it. Social media users have identified the picture as ‘Maa Flyover’.
The two-building shown in the photo appear to be the pictures of famous five-star hotels in the city outlining the flyover. The building seen in the photo appears to be ITC Sonar Bangla and JW Marriot, according to the official statement released by Trinamool.
TMC on the UP govt advertorial goof-up
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien mockingly said that CM Yogi Adityanath made 11 Bengal visits to acknowledge development works in Bengal. “We would like to congratulate the UP CM Yogi Adityanath for acknowledging the great works of Mamata Banerjee in Bengal,” MP Derek said in a press conference today.
According to TMC leaders, the UP unit of BJP does not have any development works on their plate. So they are now copying Mamata Banerjee’s development in Bengal. Abhishek Banerjee tweeted, “Transforming UP for @myogiadityanath means stealing images from infrastructure seen in Bengal under @MamataOfficial’s leadership and using them as his own!”
Meanwhile, TMC MP Mahua Moitra said, “Thuggy Yogi in his UP ads with Kolkata’s MAA flyover, our JW Marriott & our iconic yellow taxis! Change your soul or at least your ad agency Gudduji!”

After the social media outbursts, the newspaper that published the ad has claimed responsibility for the goof up. They have tweeted that the mistake was made by the agency’s marketing department. As per the ongoing process of publishing government advertorials, the government officer-in-charge of media has to issue final approval. Most importantly, the process is stringently followed in third-party ads.
“Any government advertisement needs approval from the government officials before publishing. BJP forced the newspaper agency to make such claims,” TMC leader Samir Chakraborty said today. As per Samir Chakraborty, India is currently facing ‘unsaid press censorship’ and ‘undeclared emergency’.
Akhilesh and BJP on advertorial goof-up
Amid the chaos, BJP leader of the opposition (West Benga), Suvendu Adhikari has said that “Fake propaganda peddlers latched on to an advertorial error of a Newspaper. The UP Govt doesn’t need to borrow (that too image) from a state, on the verge of bankruptcy due to mismanagement of its Administration.”
Digpu News tried to contact Priyanka Tibrewal but was unable to reach her. Priyanka Tibrewal will contest by-polls against CM Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency.
In Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav has said that the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is copying Samajwadi party development works. He tweeted, “Till now, the BJP government of UP was falsely propagating the works of the SP government, but now it has reached the limit of falsehood when it is telling the picture of Kolkata as the picture of its development.”
Led by Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party is the primary opposition of BJP’s Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming elections in 2022.
